Hysteroscopy is a procedure used to examine the inside of the uterus (womb). A hysteroscope is a thin, telescope-like instrument with its light source. The hysteroscope is inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. This allows your doctor to view the inside of the uterus on a video screen.
Why is a Hysteroscopy Important?
Diagnostic hysteroscopy is used to find the cause of abnormal bleeding from the uterus. It can also be used to find polyps or fibroids.
Treatment hysteroscopy removes polyps, fibroids, or blockages in the uterus. It can also be used to treat heavy bleeding.
Hysteroscopy is usually done as an outpatient procedure. This means you will not have to stay in a hospital overnight. The process takes 30 minutes to 1 hour.
You will likely have some cramping during and after the procedure. You may also have some bleeding and discharge for a few days.
Before the Procedure
- Physical exam, including a pelvic exam
- Blood tests
- Pap smear
- Ultrasound
We will ask you about your medications. Sometimes, we may ask you to stop taking them up to 1 week before the procedure.
