What's A Colposcopy?

A colposcopy is a procedure to closely examine your cervix, vagina, and vulva for signs of disease.

During a colposcopy, our specialist will use a particular instrument called a colposcope to look at these tissues. A colposcopy is similar to a microscope. It magnifies the tissues so that the doctor can see them more clearly.

During a colposcopy, we may also take a small tissue sample (biopsy). A biopsy is usually done if abnormal areas are seen during the exam. We will send the tissue sample to a laboratory for testing.

Why is a Colposcopy Important?

A Colposcopy is the Subsequent Procedure After a Pap Smear

A colposcopy is done to find abnormal areas in the cervix, vagina and vulva. These areas may be precancerous or cancerous. A colposcopy may also be done if you have abnormal results on a Pap test. A Pap test is a screening test for cervical cancer.

What should you know about colposcopy procedure

Tell your doctor if you’re pregnant. A colposcopy is usually not done during pregnancy because the procedure may cause bleeding. If you’re pregnant and colposcopy is needed, our specialists will discuss the risks and benefits with you.

How You Prepare
You don’t need any special preparation for a colposcopy.
What You Can Expect

A colposcopy usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. Our specialist will look at your cervix, vagina and vulva through the colposcope. If need be, we may take a biopsy during the exam. A biopsy is usually done if abnormal areas are seen. In most cases, a biopsy is not painful. But you may feel some pressure or cramping.

After the procedure
You can go home after a colposcopy. You may have some mild cramping for a short time after the procedure. If a biopsy is done, you may have spotting or light bleeding for a few days. We usually give you the results of the biopsy at your follow-up appointment.
